Capturing an Essence in Watercolor
Jim McFarlane
Monday – Thursday, April 27-30

In this workshop you will concentrate on design and painting elements that lead to fresh, loose portrayals of the essence of the scene. Exercises are designed to help you “see” and “capture” the underlying abstraction, values, strong design and expressive color. Individual attention and critiques make this workshop a valuable experience in improving your watercolor paintings. Bring at least 20 good landscape photos to start.

Painting Intuitively – For intermediate to advanced painters
Karen Baumeister
Saturday- Sunday, August 8 and 9
10am-4pm

This workshop is for the artist who has the desire to experience a more intuitive way of painting. Observation and memory will be used for a point of departure.
Individual assistance, group critique, and ongoing discussions will focus on a number of complex issues, such as the relationship between technical skill and personal sensibility; rational decision-making vs. intuitive response; and conscious vs. unconscious art making. Included will be exercises on freeing the mind and hand. Examples from contemporary and modern art will serve to broaden understanding of innovative painting. Handouts on selected artists’ writings will be given.
2 sessions - $160

The Clothed Figure
Frances Galante
Monday - Friday, August 17-21
10am-3pm

In this five-day intensive workshop we will work from the figure, dressed in contemporary clothing, in as naturalistic a setting as possible. On the first day we’ll complete three paint sketches (11x14 or smaller) in a limited palette of burnt sienna and ultramarine blue, to get the general shapes, lights and darks, and warm and cool tones. The second, third and fourth day we’ll work in full color on a large canvas (around 18x24) for a sustained pose – the same pose for three days, for a total of 15 hours. On the fifth and last day of the workshop we’ll do a one-day painting, alla prima, on a medium size canvas (14x18). During the lunch breaks (bring your lunch) we’ll look at reproductions of paintings and discuss issues such as content, context, point of view and expressive posture, as well as the formal aesthetic concerns of composition, color mixing and how the paint is applied. Bring many surfaces of different sizes and proportions.
