About the Exhibition

John Laub’s landscape paintings are immersive environments of lush forests, winding pathways, and sun-soaked beaches. His depictions of places like Fire Island, Coral Gables, and the Adirondacks celebrate the picturesque beauty of nature and reveal his joyous love of paint. Laub’s canvases are filled with expressive brushstrokes and intense color. Focusing on his large-scale paintings, the exhibition also included a selection of the artist’s prints and drawings. This presentation marked the first solo showing of Laub’s work in Philadelphia in over two decades.

Born in Philadelphia, Laub (1947–2005) studied at Temple University’s Tyler School of Art, the School of Visual Arts in New York, and the Philadelphia College of Art, from which he received a degree in graphic design. He moved to New York in 1984, where he was represented by Fischbach Gallery. Laub was a longtime AIDS activist and for five years he was a supervisor of the AIDS hotline of the Gay Men’s Health Crisis.
