In Big Red Blossom strong color rendered in thick, impastoed layers of paint creates an atmosphere of physical and emotional intensity. Edges softly contain the swirling colors as they gain energy and momentum and flow through the painting's surface. Light continues to be an influence as both subject and inspiration.

Dessner described the "spirit and passion" of Vincent Van Gogh as inspiration for these works. "Van Gogh is one of the few artists who painted in a state of grace. He seemed to make paintings that were just marks of color and no shadow or shading."
