As a socially conscious artist, George Biddle frequently took ordinary Americans as his subject matter. In this drawing, four African American men gather to make music. Biddle produced this work in the same year he was appointed to serve as the chair of the War Department Advisory Committee, which sent artists overseas to portray everyday life during war.
