Description & Inscriptions

[lower left of drawing in graphite]: Violet Oakley; [lower left under signature in red ink]: stamped monogram initials; [bottom left of drawing in graphite]: Giorgio Ciompi - child violinist - done in / Florence; [verso in black ink]: Giorgio Ciampi [sic]
A native of Florence, Ciompi was a renowned concert violinist. After WWII, he and his wife (later joined by their son), made their home in America, where Ciompi enjoyed continued success, first with the NBC Symphony, Cleveland Institute of Music, and Duke University. If Oakley made this study during her 1928 stay in Florence, Ciompi would have been 10 years old and, as suggested by the inscription, a true virtuoso.
