Having fled Istanbul for Nice, France in the 1920s, Garabed Hovnanian (1898-1970) practiced as an architect until he moved to Philadelphia in 1932 at the request of a friend. Hovnanian soon adopted the Christian Science faith of his hosts and later became an active member of the church in Kansas City, where he died.
