The adult and child depicted by a lake are Edith Emerson's brother and niece. Six years younger than Edith, Willard Emerson (1894-1966) was an investment banker and after WWII became a professor at his alma mater, Cornell University. In 1951 he was appointed Vice President of University Development. Two years later he returned to investment banking. Willard and his wife Ethel had four children, Ann, Jonathan, Willard, Jr., and Barbara, who is depicted here with her father.
