Making his fortune in pharmaceuticals in Canada, Lawrence moved his family back to the U.S. in 1888. His daughter Louise was a roommate of Oakley's sister Hester when both attended Vassar. Lawrence founded Sarah Lawrence College in Westchester, NY.
