Inspired by the art of Dina Wind, students will explore the world of three-dimensional art. Wind considered her metal sculptures "drawings in space," an approach the students will follow as they design and construct their sculptures. Demonstrations and creative experimentation will encourage students in the process of transforming materials such as paper, tin, found objects, cardboard, paint, wood scraps and others into free-standing and relief sculptures. Students will discover the effects of light and shadow, the role of scale and proportion, and how the placement of forms and spaces between and around transform in unexpected ways and from different viewpoints.
Dina Wind sought out scrap metal and car part yards to collect discarded tools, saw blades, tires, fenders, and pipes as raw materials for her sculptures. Woodmere's collection of Wind's art and her monumental outdoor 30' steel sculpture, Spring & Triangle, (on Woodmere's grounds), will serve as a springboard for ideas and imagination, showing the impact of three-dimensional art on the surrounding environment.
