This talk introduces several female artists and their diverse artistic practices during the early part of the twentieth century. It will include artists from the Philadelphia Ten such as Theresa Bernstein, Fern Coppedge, and Susan Gertrude Schell, as well as Margaret McDonald, Paula Modersohn-Becker and Georgia O’Keeffe. The emphasis is on how these artists and their circles, found ways to exhibit and sell their works. when few opportunities existed for women artists. Despite prejudice and obstacles, these women succeeded in forging meaningful careers, whether in groups like the Philadelphia Ten or as artists working alone.
