The connections between the visual arts and the study of history are abundant. With appropriate source materials, educators can mine these natural connections for their students to gain insights into historical events and develop critical thinking skills.
This workshop will focus on the murals by Philadelphia-based artist Violet Oakley, created for and currently on view in the Senate Chamber in the Pennsylvania State Capitol. Oakley's murals highlight themes and scenes from the Revolutionary War and Civil War eras and speak to the creation of American government and the preservation of the Union almost eighty years later. Teaching materials will be provided for classroom use.
