This workshop is designed for the beginner to advanced student seeking to become comfortable with mark making, hoping to find enjoyment, awe and ease in painting with watercolors, and enhancing their techniques in drawing and watercolor painting. This workshop is organized in the following way:
Lesson 1: Intros, Blind Drawings, Experiencing Work and Assessing “Value” (degree of light), Seeing for Drawing, Watercolor Play
Lesson 2: Patchwork Watercolors, Warm and Cool Observational Color Studies
Lesson 3: Vertical Watercolor Painting, Seamless and Effortless Color Blending Strategies
Lesson 4: Mixing Luminous Grays, Subduing and Framing Vibrancy to Create Form, Applying Techniques to a Final Piece, Conclusion
Exploratory exercises will build comfort in drawing and watercolor painting by: learning the timing needed for achieving desired effects such as soft blends, crisp edges, and controlled layering; discovering tools and techniques for refining work (yes- it’s possible to “erase” watercolor!); and providing prompts for seeing as it translates to drawing and painting. Exercises will enable students to develop a fluid and colorful sketchbook practice, as well refined abstract and representational works.
