About the Exhibition

This small exhibition celebrated a recent gift to Woodmere from the family of Impressionist painter Walter Elmer Schofield (1866–1944). The gift included Wissahickon in Winter and an important group of landscape paintings. Schofield divided his time between Chestnut Hill and Cornwall, England. From his brother’s home at 408 West Moreland Avenue, Schofield would walk along the Cresheim Valley to capture the natural beauty of the Wissahickon Creek in his paintings. One of the leading voices of American Impressionism, Schofield’s paintings are prized for their vigorous brushwork, elegant design, vibrant palette, and breadth of energy.
