Cannon was a detective show centered on the career of Frank Cannon, a retired Los Angeles Police Department officer who begins a new career as a private eye, primarily serving clients in Southern California but occasionally investigating farther afield. The show was notorious for dramatic squealing tire sound effects during car chase scenes regardless of whether the pursuit was happening on city streets or dirt roads.

Before becoming an actor, William Conrad (1920–1994) was an American fighter pilot in World War II. After serving in the war, he moved to Hollywood and played various character roles in film noirs, radio series, and television shows. He found stardom when he was cast as the lead in Cannon, which led to his Emmy Award nominations in 1973 and 1974.
