Burko’s early landscapes capture the beauty of the natural world. In Étretat Droite I and Étretat Droite II she depicts the extraordinary white cliffs of Étretat, France. Rising up and jutting into the English Chanel, the stunning natural rock formations reveal the beautiful effects of erosion. Like the impressionist painters, for whom Étretat was a favorite subject, Burko explores the changing effects of lights throughout the day. The diptych’s subtle differences reveal the changing blue of the sky, the receding tide, and the soft shadows on the rocks.
