Martha Mayer Erlebacher, M.D.M.L.D.

Erlebacher’s amusing version of Leonardo da Vinci’s Mona Lisa is a reference to Marcel Duchamp’s gesture of adding a mustache to the famous portrait. Erlebacher took the irreverence one step further, transforming the enigmatic woman into a squawking duck. This painting is part of her whimsical series of portraits with rubber ducks substituted for well-known subjects; the series was never exhibited.
