Ben Rose, Self-Portrait

Date
1975
Medium
Gelatin silver print
Credit Line
Gift of Kathy and Peter Rose, 2013
Dimensions
20 x 16 1/4 in.

Taken on a Nikon camera when Rose was in his early 60s, this photograph offers a humorous allusion to Shiva, a Hindu god often depicted with multiple arms. With his many arms, Rose holds his many lighting instruments: a strobe, a bulb, and the control panel used to trigger the lights. The black background is the deliberate result of the dramatic illumination created by the side lighting.
