Gilbert Lewis, Still Life with Tulip

Date
1984
Medium
Gouache on Arches paper
Credit Line
Gift of Eric Rymshaw and James Fulton, 2017
Dimensions
22 x 30 in.

Still life was a subject for Lewis from time to time throughout his career. Here, a glass with a collapsed, wilted tulip and a beaker with assertive greens stand as characters against the clean light of untouched paper. For Lewis, the drama of still life could be as emotive as figure painting.
