Charles Santore, Taxi: Danny DeVito and Judd Hirsch

Taxi was a slice of life sitcom about cab drivers in New York City. Danny DeVito (born 1944) played Louie De Palma, the irascible dispatcher of the fictitious Sunshine Cab Company. Here De Palma’s hand gesture and facial expression suggest that he is in mid-argument with his employee, Alex Reiger, portrayed by Judd Hirsch (born 1935). De Palma was notorious for starting fights with and bullying his employees and Reiger’s face suggests that he is ready with a sarcastic reply.

Hirsch and DeVito rose to stardom on this popular sitcom, and both received several awards for their respective roles in the show, including a Golden Globe and several Emmys.
