In all likelihood, the model in this painting wished to be depicted in his tuxedo. Was he someone who attended many gala events? Or perhaps a caterer? Lewis allows his viewers to construct their own narratives. The painting is a tour de force that shows off the artist’s ability to depict the various textures of black-on-black materials, from the patent leather shoes to the satin cummerbund and lapels.
