Arthur B. Carles, Untitled [Man]
Arthur B. Carles was born in Philadelphia and attended Central Manual High School before enrolling at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts in 1900. His teachers at the Academy included Cecilia Beaux and Hugh Breckenridge.
Carles taught at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts from 1917 until 1925. He left an indelible impression on the hundred or so Philadelphia painters who studied with him, such as Faye Swengel Badura, Elizabeth Godshalk Burger, Quita Brodhead, Jean Knox Chambers, Jessie Drew-Bear, Moy Glidden, Betty W. Hubbard, Agnes Hood Miller, Jane Piper, Francis Speight, and Vera White.
In August 1932, under the patronage of Carroll S. Tyson, he moved to a house and studio on East Evergreen Avenue, where he lived until 1946.
