Gilbert Lewis, Untitled [Self-portrait from a Photo Booth Photo]

Gift of Eric Barton Rymshaw, 2017
6 1/2 x 5 3/4 in.

It was unusual for Lewis to work from photographs, but here he depicts himself as he appeared in a photobooth snapshot. His dark jacket contrasts strongly with his overexposed features. The gentle watercolor gestures are atmospheric. Depicting himself with his eyes closed, Lewis shows himself to be as much a dramatist as a delicate, introspective person.
