Walton was an admired conceptual artist in Philadelphia who did not date his work; in this way, he felt the work of art would be constantly fresh, with no date to anchor it in time. Here he dipped two pieces of fabric into a gesso medium and allowed them to harden. They hang from a bar, a mysterious “couple” frozen in time, and we are asked to contemplate their relationship.
