Yard II depicts the Pine Street side of the historic University of the Arts building, where Day taught for many decades. In 1978, the yard was a public entrance.

The large brick building that dominates the composition was designed by renowned Philadelphia architect Frank Furness. The building had been altered repeatedly for almost a century, and Day depicts the changes to windows and surfaces as well as strewn objects in meticulous detail. Day also depicts the then-new glassblowing studio at left, offering a “conversation” between the old and the new.
