Three Women in a Garden
I understand that paintings by Laura Wheeler Waring will be included in the upcoming exhibit of African American artists in Philadelphia. Waring studied illustration under McCarter at PAFA around 1916 and maintained contact with him in the 1920s. His influence is evident in some illustrations that Waring did for the NAACP's publication, "Crisis." I am working on a biography of Laura Wheeler Waring, the first African American woman to receive PAFA's Cresson Traveling Scholarships, one of the few awards for which illustration students were eligible to apply.
